This MEng programme equips you with the underlying knowledge and skills you need to become a creative Civil and Structural Engineer, capable of planning, designing and overseeing the construction of sustainable structures and transport infrastructure systems.

Civil and structural Engineering involves the design, construction and maintenance and repair infrastructure such as roads and bridges, buildings, and underground transport systems.

You’ll develop a broad knowledge of geotechnical, structural, environmental and management aspects of civil engineering, and gain the computing, mathematical, drawing and communication skills you need as an engineer.

On completion of the programme you’ll be able to enter range of graduate civil engineering roles. Our employability rate is 97% - one of the highest in the UK.

You’ll be joining a dynamic profession with a high demand for skilled graduates, and contribute to the prosperity of our society.

We offer a 5-year MEng version of the programme, which includes a placement year in industry. We also offer a 3-year BEng version of the programme – the additional year studied on this four-year programme enables further study of construction management, and advanced core technical subjects such as geotechnics and structural dynamics.

Professional Accreditation/Recognition

This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators which includes the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation, and satisfies the educational base to becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This course is also recognised by ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education).

The curriculum is informed by our Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board meaning you’ll be learning skills required by the sector, enhancing your employability.

Several members of our Advisory Board deliver lectures, provide site visits, and mentor and employ students.

You will be taught by research-active staff who are experts in their fields, and serve in numerous national and international committees. This ensures that you are taught the latest advances in the subject areas, and are given exciting opportunities to work on ongoing research projects.

We offer unique laboratory teaching and research facilities, including:

  • Structures Laboratory and Civil Engineering Research Laboratory 
  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Laboratory
  • Multidisciplinary Engineering Laboratory

You’ll join a relatively small cohort of students in which everyone is valued and looked after by members of staff, who maintain an open-door policy with all our students and offer tailored advice and support.

We have a very active student-led Civil Engineering Society (CivSoc), which provides a non-academic platform for interaction between students and academics, industrialists and professional institutions. CivSoc organises several talks, site visits and tournaments every year.

A levels:

To include A-level Maths.

BTEC Extended Diploma:

Must be an Engineering subject including Further Maths for Engineering Technicians module.

Applicants on Access Programmes:

Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering or Science and Engineering - must include a minimum of 12 credits in Maths.

Plus minimum of:

GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or 4 (equivalents accepted).

English language requirements:

Minimum IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent.

If you do not meet the IELTS requirement, you can take a University of Bradford pre-sessional English course. See the Language Centre for more details.

Typical offer: ABB / 128 UCAS points

DDM. Must be an Engineering subject - Further Maths for Engineering Technicians module at minimum Distinction.

128 UCAS tariff points from an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering or Science and Engineering - must include a minimum of 12 credits in Maths at minimum Merit.

Plus minimum of:

GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or 4 (equivalents accepted).

Learning activities and assessment

We deliver our modules using innovative teaching methods that combine theory with practice.

You’ll undertake a range of design exercises where you’ll address real industry problems/scenarios.

These projects enable you to apply your theoretical knowledge, while improving your communication skills.

Teaching methods include formal lectures, case studies, tutorial exercises, practical demonstrations, site visits, directed learning, group and individual work. Modules are assessed through formal written examinations, class tests, analytical and experimental coursework, presentations.

Study Abroad

All of our programmes offer the opportunity to study abroad, with one or two semesters at an international partner institution.

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Career prospects

Civil Engineers are amongst the most employable and highly paid of all graduates. After six to seven years of experience you can satisfy the requirements of the professional institutions and become a Chartered Engineer, allowing you to move into more specialised areas.
