Yorkshire in Bloom award for campus

The achievement is thanks to the hard work of the landscaping team in creating a vibrant and colourful campus, including new planting areas, wildflower spaces and the addition of a small wildlife pond. 

Head gardener Simon Padgett said: “Winning Silver Gilt for Yorkshire in Bloom means a lot to the University. It's a great achievement and one which my team and I are very proud of. There is a lot of planning that goes into our campus grounds and hopefully we can go for gold next year.”

Yorkshire in Bloom is a voluntary regional organisation that administers the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom Campaign in North, South, East, West and North Yorkshire.

The annual competition encourages communities of all sizes to make a positive and lasting improvement to their local environment for the benefit of local people.  It also aims to encourage and develop community spirit and civic pride, as well as promoting sustainability. 

The competition is assessed by local judges according to RHS criteria. Marks are awarded and are related to standards of Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver and Bronze.

RHS Britain in Bloom is the largest horticultural campaign in Europe. It includes categories for villages through to cities, as well as charitable establishments, business premises, visitor attractions, universities, colleges and further education institutions and more. 

This latest accolade follows the Green Flag award, celebrating the country's best parks and green spaces, which the University has achieved every year since 2015.
