Café Scientifique is a national movement, in more than 60 towns and cities in the UK, for members of the public to hear about topical scientific research by leading academics in a relaxed and friendly environment. 

In Bradford, it is run by the University of Bradford, the National Science and Media Museum and Theatre in the Mill. This year's programme includes such wide-ranging topics as cryptocurrency, personalised medicine, sleep and even the "Science of Whisky" - some suggested by regular audience members. 

Each month, an expert in their field will deliver a short talk with a chance for questions at the end, and all completely free. Previously, Café Scientifique has been held at the National Science and Media Museum, but due to refurbishment, this year's programme will be held at BrewDog on Great Horton Road. 

Informal and sociable

Programme director and University of Bradford scientist Dr Gisela Helfer said: "This year, we asked for topic suggestions from our regular audience members and I am really pleased that we have a very varied and exciting programme coming up. From cryptocurrency to whisky to hackers to the science of the paranormal, we've got it all covered. 

“The whole idea of Cafe Scientifique is it’s for everyone and it’s nice and informal, so people can come alone or with friends and have a cup of tea or glass of wine, it’s a very sociable event and a great atmosphere.

"It's a free event and we look forward seeing you all there."
