Hamza is living at home whilst studying at the University of Bradford. He tells us about his experience of being a student who lives at home and gives some tips and tricks along the way.

Hey there, companion readers! I want to take you on a little journey of my life as a student who has chosen to adapt to the academic journey while still living at home. Yes, you guessed it, I'm a student living at home, and let me tell you, it's been quite the ride so far.

How I am being independent as a student living at home

Routine self-care

Personally, putting self-care first is fundamental for a healthy overall well-being whilst living at home. I schedule regular breaks during study sessions, integrate exercise into my routine, and make certain I get enough sleep. Balancing academic commitments with self-care contributes to sustained productivity.

Where I study (at home, at uni, a mix of both)

My home environment offers an accustomed and calm space for focused study which is why I prefer to study at home. But not to worry! You might have a different preference which is perfectly fine too.

Relaxation and familiarity

I find home provides a relaxed atmosphere where I can study in a familiar space, which contributes towards my enhanced focus and productivity. I've intentionally designed my study space to reduce distractions. This means keeping my phone on silent, creating a clutter-free desk, and purposefully placing my study materials. It's amazing how these small adjustments make a big difference whilst studying at home.

Own pace

The ability to create my own schedule is a major benefit. It allows me to adapt my study routine to my most productive times of the day which brings the best out of me in each study session. We all have those hours when our focus is at its highest. For me, it's the early morning and late evening. Nonetheless, if you have different focus hours the same principal applies and allows you to get the most productivity out of yourself.

No stress learning environment

The lack of the pressures that are frequently correlated with public study spaces contributes to a stress-free learning environment. This peace allows for more immersive engagement with the study material, stimulating a genuine understanding of the subject material. The lack of external public pressures means I can take breaks whenever I feel the need without the guilt associated with public spaces. Stepping outside for fresh air in a brief activity helps me recharge, ensuring I return to my studies at home with a clear mind.

How I get to university from home

The University of Bradford is within a reasonable walking distance from home, walking is a straightforward and healthy option. I have the flexibility to leave whenever I’m ready, and I do not have to depend on external schedules like waiting on a bus to arrive for instance.

How I make friends when living at home

Approachable

Approachability is key in making friends when living at home. Smiling, making eye contact, and beginning small talk initiate a welcoming environment. I found that being approachable from the beginning made it easier for others to reach out, start conversations with me and establish friendships.

Participate in group projects

Group projects provide an opportunity to work closely with colleagues. I recently remember a group project where we had to create a presentation. The collaboration brought us together, and after the project, we persisted to hang out and became a close group of friends.

How I have a student life at university when living at home

Structured with a calendar

Living at home requires effective time management. I use a calendar to stay organised, manage class schedules, study sessions, and personal commitments. Doing so ensures I never feel overwhelmed. Remember, living at home during university can be a rewarding experience when approached with a proactive mindset.

Webinars

Staying connected with the University community is key. I actively attend virtual webinars coordinated by the University. While I may not live on campus, I still try to use University facilities such as the library to enhance my overall subject knowledge and enhance my university experience.

Living the student life at home

Living the student life at home is not just an option, it's a lifestyle filled with belief. From self-care practices to the thoughtful freedom of setting my own study pace, it's a journey that's uniquely mine, and yours could equally be as exceptional as mine.

As I continue down this path, I'm not just a student at home, I'm a leader directing my academic transport through the depths of independence. So, here's to the home living students, the independent learners, and all those shaping their own student narrative.

May your calendars be structured, your friendships be energetic, and your home be the initial starting phase for academic journeys. Until next time, and all the very best!
