Biography
Ifiok Otung is a Chartered Engineer, Professor of Space Engineering, and Director of the Bradford-Renduchintala Centre for Space AI, University of Bradford, UK. He was formerly Professor of Satellite Communications at the University of South Wales where he established PhD training and research as well as two professionally accredited and highly successful MSc degrees in the subject. Prior to that, he was a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey where his work was focused on satellite link measurements and channel modelling.Ifiok holds a PhD in Satellite Communications from the University of Surrey, UK and First-Class Honours and Masterâs degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He is an award-winning academic with a broad international experience in Scholarship, Teaching, Industrial collaboration, and Research (STIR). Ifiok is Associate Editor of Journal of Engineering, Editor of Advances in Communications Satellite Systems, Technical Program Chair of the International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC), Accreditor for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and member of the Communication Systems Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Professor Otung is sole author of several major textbooks used in top universities around the world, such as Oxford, Cambridge and UCL in the UK. These books include Communication Engineering Principles 2E (Wiley, 2021, 952 pages, ISBN 978-1119274025), Digital Communications Principles and Systems (IET, 2014, 500 pages, ISBN 978-1849196116), etc. Ifiok has served as Consultant and Principal Investigator for various research and development organisations, and as External Examiner of taught programmes at universities in Scotland and England. He has supervised over 150 MSc and PhD candidates, and contributed to around 200 technical outputs in Journals, conferences, and workshops. Professor Otungâs research covers Space Technology (radio resource management, high throughput satellite (HTS) systems, design of ultra-reliable LEO satellite downlinks for hyperspectral earth observation and imaging, fade and interference prediction and mitigation, mobile satellite channel modelling and performance enhancement, radio wave propagation), Signal Processing (AI, signal detection, radar, satellite beacon and meteorological data analysis and modelling, GNSS filters design), and Wireless communication (security, bandwidth- and energy-efficient RF signal design, array antennas, 5G/6G-satellite integration and harmonisation).
