The former director of the university’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics said he planned to shine a light on the university’s outstanding research and innovation.

Professor El-Khamisy, who has had his own cancer research being patented and published in Nature and Nature Communications, said prospective students should view Bradford as a centre of excellence in numerous disciplines.

“The Institute for Cancer Therapeutics is working on chemotherapy drugs that have fewer side effects, while our spin-out company Incanthera is developing smart drugs to target cancer cells.

“We have the newly established Centre for Digital Innovations in Health and Social Care with approximately £5 million grant from ResearchEngland that I think is a testament to the confidence the wider digital innovation community has in the work we do.

“We excel in research in so many other fields, including dementia care, archaeology, biotechnology, skin and hair research, artificial intelligence, engineering, smart and nano-materials.“I’m excited to get stuck into my new role, there’s a huge opportunity to make the best use of our resources to bring clarity into our student offer.”

He added: “Preparing for REF (Research Excellence Framework) in 2029 is a priority, and defining what we are good at and focussing on the things we do best will serve us well for the future.

“With Bradford 2025 just round the corner, part of my role will be to make sure activities that are part of the City of Culture are using our research in creative ways to bring our work into the spotlight and show what we excel at.

It’s any exciting time. Building trust and leading by example, for me, means being actively involved in good research and making an impact.”
