Students translate research ideas into new medical technologies

Biomedical and Electronics Engineering academics and students have translated research ideas into new medical technologies to improve health and wealth in the region.

Prof. Raed Alhameed, Dr Peter Twigg and Dr Frashid Sefat were awarded a total of 8 summer student projects through the Leeds MedTech Translate Programme to take medical research ideas a step closer to innovative medical product development.

Improve quality of life for patients

Topics covered by these projects range from fabrication and characterisation of biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering, to development of a synthetic ligament and wearable sensors for indoor patient monitoring. The ultimate goal is to improve patients’ quality of life and quality of healthcare service provision.

Opportunities for students

These projects also provide an excellent opportunity for current research students to advance their research, postgraduate and undergraduate students to gain work experience in real-life research environments which would enhance their academic, career and personal development.
