Dr Jonathan Smith
Why did I join the Innovation and skills advisory board?
I am the space sector lead within the STFC Hartree Centre – a publicly sponsored centre with a mission to accelerate adoption of AI and big data in industry supporting national facilities for the benefit of the business community. Although I trained as a physicist, and have worked in a variety of space relevant sectors, throughout my career an enduring theme has been exploring ways to make intelligent decisions using computational technology to reduce time to solution of engineering and business problems. I am thankful to do this in my day-to-day work now. My association with the Bradford-Benduchintala Centre for Space AI will offer me new opportunities to facilitate new AI approaches to space challenges.
What can I offer to the Centre?
- Experience across SME, large corporations, academia and government funded laboratories.
- Exposure to a range of space industries including propulsion, sat comms, edge compute.
- Links to major UK facilities supporting UK AI research community
- Links to big tech companies engaging in the AI ecosystem
- Experience of scoping business/researcher collaborative R&D projects
