My journey into studying Business as an adult learner
Bradford Life Blog

Naomi is studying BSc International Business and Management. She discusses her route to university as an adult learner and dreams for the future.

My name is Naomi, and I am studying BSc (Hons) International Business and Management. After several years in the world of work, I decided to apply to the University of Bradford. I wanted to grow academically and move forward in my career.

Life as an adult learner

This decision, however, was not without its challenges. I was apprehensive about being able to assimilate information after being away from an academic setting for so long.

As a mature student, I was also concerned about the age gap between myself and other students.

Despite these challenges, my return to university has been a transformative experience. This is thanks to the immense support I received from the academic team, my personal academic tutor (PAT), and some of my peers. Their friendliness and encouragement made the transition much easier.

International Business and Management

I chose to study International Business and Management, a niche field that aligns with my career aspirations. My ultimate goal is to work for a multinational corporation, ideally one of the Fortune 500 companies.

My research suggested an international business degree would best equip me with the skills and knowledge required to work in various sectors. Navigating business operations across different countries is essential in today’s globalised world.

The best bits of the course

One highlight of studying this course is the opportunity to delve into diverse subjects. I also met people from different management disciplines. This diversity has enriched my learning experience and broadened my perspective.

Additionally, working closely with the staff in the School of Management has been invaluable. As has becoming a student ambassador and student representative for my programme. These roles have allowed me to develop a lot of transferable skills and engage more deeply with the academic community.

Being back at university has allowed me to grow significantly. I have gained insights into various aspects of international business. We explore why companies expand internationally, which markets are suitable for growth, and the strategic considerations of expansion.

These learnings have been eye-opening and have further fuelled my passion for the field.

Looking ahead

My aim for the future is to work as a business analyst and help companies remain relevant in the industry. I am particularly interested in opportunities in Asia, specifically Korea or Singapore. These countries have achieved tremendous economic growth in recent years and are part of the world's emerging market.

To achieve this goal, I have leveraged the support provided by the University. For instance, I participated in a study abroad programme. I am currently seeking a placement to gain more exposure, experience, and professional growth before I start the third year of my degree.

I am also preparing for professional certifications to ease my transition into my desired career path. These certifications will not only enhance my credentials but also provide me with a competitive edge in the job market.

Looking back, I can confidently say that my decision to return to education has been one of the best choices I have made. The University of Bradford has played a crucial role in my journey, providing the support and resources needed to succeed. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and, as I continue on this path, am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
