I'm Oshan, an international student from India. I'm currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Bradford and live in one of the student accommodations near the University of Bradford.

Pre-arrival

moving-in

Moving from the comfort of your home to a new place can be both exciting and overwhelming.

If you're coming to Bradford, you'll be spoilt for choice with accommodation. These are some of the student accommodation options available:

Most of these accommodations can be booked through Unipol's website. You can also find accommodation on some external provider sites such as Homes For Students, UniversityLiving, and Amberstudent.

Then, once your accommodation is confirmed, it’s time to prepare for move-in! A pro tip is to look at the accommodation website and move-in guides to avoid unnecessary over-packing.

My checklist

It can be hard to know what to bring with you. The list contains some of the essentials that I bought with me while packing to move around 4670 miles away from home.

1. Skincare

Everyone's skin is unique and each individual has their own skincare routine with preferred products. Finding your favourite personalised products in a new country can be challenging, hence why it is always better to bring your personalised version from home.

2. Books

Travelling, especially for many hours, can be hard. That's why I would always recommend that you have one or two good reads with you. Books are a great way to pass the time and can also give you a much-needed break from technology.

3. Cooking essentials

It is always better to have a few essential cooking utensils such as a small pan, kettle, and cutlery to make simple meals as you get acquainted with your new surroundings. Instant food can be a lifesaver during freshers’ weeks and while you're recovering from post-travel exhaustion.

4. Something to remind you of home

Having something to remind you of home can be great for helping yourself to settle in. Attar/Ittar, which is like a customized fragrance/perfume, is a well-known product in Asian countries. I brought a few bottles with me as the scent reminds me of home and always creates a soothing and comforting environment.

5. Bedding

For bedding, you can either buy them after your arrival or you can pre-order before your arrival. If you're moving from overseas, I'd recommend buying them when you get to the UK.

6. Other things to think about

If you're moving overseas like I was, it's a good idea to carry a universal adapter, power bank and extension cord for your electronic devices.

I don't think this one needs to be said but you can pack your clothes, footwear, water bottle, first aid kit and photos as per your choice and convenience.

7. Don't forget your ID

This one is super important!

Don't forget your wallet, ID cards, and bank card. Your Passport and other essential documents are important for travel verification (airport visa check in), university enrolment and many other procedures.

Another tip is to bring some cash with you as it can be useful to allow you to have a smooth travel experience.

Trust the process

Once you start settling in, don't be afraid to interact with various people from your accommodation and the University. You could even ask around the city for advice on shopping and other things. Always know that Bradford is here to support you and you can contact the Student Support Services and the Students' Union regarding any queries.

It might take a little time to settle in and you might feel homesick, however, just trust the process and and enjoy every moment. It will all be worth it in the end.
