Overview

Do you want to change the way you care for people with dementia or improve the service you offer? Do you want to make sure any changes you consider are informed by the best available evidence? Do you want to learn more about how to find and interrogate evidence to ensure you are making the best decisions regarding care practice for the people with dementia?

This part-time online distance learning module can be studied as part of the Postgraduate Certificate Dementia Studies and is one of the core modules on the 3-year MSc Advanced Dementia Studies.

You are also able to take this module as a single, stand-alone module to gain 30-credits.

The module gives you the opportunity to consider the value of different types of evidence, including the role research plays in evidence-based practice, as well as other types of evidence such as clinical intuition/experience, narrative accounts from people with dementia and policy. You will explore evidence in relation to an area of practice need and formulate evidence-based recommendations for changing practice.

This programme is intended for UK and international students who are:

Health and social care professionals who want to gain further knowledge about evidence-based dementia care practice
Voluntary workers who already have contact with people with dementia

Our flexible approach allows you to combine study with work and home life. This online module is designed to be directly applicable to the workplace and to help you develop your own and your colleagues' practice.

The course is assessed fully online - you do not need to attend the University at any point during your studies. However, this does not mean you need to study alone - you will be part of a group of fellow national and international students passionate about improving dementia care.

Learning and assessment

The module is delivered over 16-weeks, with 12 teaching weeks and four assessment weeks.

Within the 12 teaching weeks, the module content is delivered online via the University’s learning platform, Canvas. You will engage with your peers and tutors in six group discussions based on set activities (such as reviewing videos created by key stakeholders including people with dementia, exploring case studies, and evaluating research).

You will also meet three times online in real-time tutorials, where you can discuss learning and practice.

Each module has a study guide and planner which will take you through the module and all the learning activities. You will have support from your module tutor and a personal academic tutor throughout the module. You are also encouraged to share your experience with others on the course who work in a variety of health and social care roles from around the world.

There are two formal opportunities to gain formative feedback from your tutors about your assignment, including the option to submit a full draft of your assignment prior to submission.

The module is assessed by a 3,000-word review of literature related to an area of dementia care practice which is relevant to you and your interests. You will also present your findings and recommendations of this review in a 10-minute presentation to your peers online. This enables you to share ideas with your peers and stay connected to the rest of the student community.

What you will study

This module will enable you to:

independently source, critically appraise and evaluate evidence (research, clinical, direct experience) in relation to dementia practice
synthesise a range of evidence to develop an informed critical understanding of a selected area of dementia practice
forefront the value of service user input, multidisciplinary working, inclusion and diversity and global perspectives in interpreting the value of evidence
communicate findings generated from evidence appraisal

Entry requirements

Candidates should have a first degree with 2:2 or above in a relevant subject area. However, if you have had any prior experience of successful study at undergraduate or postgraduate level you may apply, providing evidence such as certificates and transcripts.

You can also apply if you have a FHEQ Level 5 (i.e: DipHE, Foundation Degree, NVQ) qualification plus a minimum of at least two years’ experience working in a dementia care or dementia service field prior to application. In this case, you will additionally need to complete an entry assignment to provide evidence of advanced standing based on a portfolio, for which you will need to achieve a mark of at least 60% at FHEQ level 6.

You must already have a work role, or voluntary placement, which regularly brings you into contact with people who have dementia for the duration of the module.

You must also have access to a computer with an internet connection, as all teaching takes place online. You must also be prepared to spend an average of 15 hours a week on your studies.
