Overview

This honours degree has been developed in collaboration with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and develops autonomous healthcare professionals with eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Paramedic.

This four-year sandwich degree programme is unique in the UK by virtue of the salaried sandwich year with Yorkshire Ambulance Service. You will learn the fundamentals of paramedic theory and practice in both university and ambulance service teaching facilities. You will also gain learning experiences under the direct supervision of mentors in ambulance service clinical practice placements, as well as other selected clinical practice areas.

The programme includes:

The role of the Paramedic

The Paramedic is an essential part of the current and future NHS workforce.

Paramedics have traditionally responded to 999 emergencies, but increasing demand for services has seen innovative ways of working across the emergency care system emerge, with Paramedics working in a range of environments.

To cope with these demands, the Paramedic needs to manage an increasingly diverse range of situations. On this programme you will learn how to manage undifferentiated patients, take medical histories, perform physical examinations, request and interpret tests, diagnose injury and illness, provide appropriate treatment and management, and counsel on preventative healthcare.

Why Bradford?

This programme has been designed in collaboration with Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS). It is currently unique in the UK by virtue of the salaried sandwich year with YAS, undertaken upon successful completion of stage two.

It is designed to develop healthcare professionals with the necessary specialist skills (gained in stage four) to allow for accelerated career progression.

This BSc (Hons) programme aligns to the College of Paramedics career framework and gives the option to undertake clinically focused modules which meet the specification for the role of ‘Specialist Paramedic’. Other specialist modules allow students to focus on other clinical specialities, such as critical care, cardiology, paediatric care, etc. Further options exist to focus study into research, education or leadership and management. All of which are aligned to the professional body framework for specialist practice routes and the needs of employers in the UK.

Bradford is a vibrant city with a varied mixture of urban areas with swathes of countryside within close proximity. As a paramedic this provides a unique opportunity for a broad range of clinical experience which more traditionally urbanised universities cannot match. Bradford is an inexpensive city to live as a student and has a thriving multi-cultural social scene.

New UCAS tariff

We use the UCAS tariff system to help us compare different qualifications. For courses starting from September 2017 onwards, the way points are calculated is changing.

The number of points you get for each qualification and grade will be lower, for example, an A* grade at A level will be worth 56 points from 2017 onwards, instead of 140 in 2016. Despite the lower points, you will still need to achieve the same grades. The only exception to this is that AS Levels will now be worth 40% of an A Level, instead of 50%.

All qualifications that are currently on the UCAS Tariff will continue to attract points under the new system. More qualifications are also being brought into the UCAS tariff system for the first time, including Access to Higher Education courses.

You will need a full clean driving licence, which must remain so for the duration of the programme. You will also need to have the right to work in the UK to be able to start the course.

A levels:

128 UCAS tariff points from 3 A Levels to include at least 1 science subject.

Please note that where a science A-level is taken, the University will require applicants to pass the practical element (for A levels awarded from August 2017 onwards).

BTEC Extended Diploma:

DDM. Health or Science subject required.

Applicants on Access Programmes:

128 UCAS tariff points from an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health Professions or Science — at least 12 credits in Science must be at minimum grade Distinction.

Plus minimum of:

Five GCSEs with a minimum grade C or grade 4 to include English Language, Mathematics, and Biology or Combined Science. Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Mathematics are acceptable in place of GCSE English and Mathematics.

Those applying with an Access course are only required to have GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or grade 4 or above. Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Mathematics are acceptable in place of GCSE English and Mathematics.

Additional entry requirements:

As part of the selection process, we interview short-listed candidates prior to making offers.

All places are offered subject to satisfactory occupational health screening, a second reference and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Evidence of recent relevant study in the last 5 years is required — please contact us for further information.

The requirements to drive emergency service vehicles include achieving C1 category on your driving licence. This qualification can facilitated by Yorkshire Ambulance Service during years 1 or 2 of the programme, however there is an additional cost associated with this which will be borne by the student.

English language requirements:

IELTS at 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-test.

If you do not meet the IELTS requirement, you can take a University of Bradford pre-sessional English course. See the Language Centre for more details.

Learning activities and assessment

During the first two years of the programme you will develop the essential clinical skills which are aligned to the role of 'Emergency Medical Technician II', including advanced driving techniques.

At the end of year two of the programme you will apply to undertake a paid sandwich year, during which time you are employed by YAS in the role of 'Emergency Medical Technician II'. This will be a full time temporary contract and you will be paid in line with the agreed Agenda for Change (AFC) pay scales, according to Annexe U. This year is credit bearing and is a required element of the programme assessed on a pass/fail basis; however it does not contribute towards your degree classification.

In the final year of the programme you will return to university and ambulance service teaching facilities based teaching, and will deepen your knowledge and skills to become competent to undertake autonomous paramedic practice at the point of registration. Again you will undertake clinical practice placements under the direct supervision of mentors. During this final stage you will also undertake optional modules drawn from the Faculty's existing CPD catalogue, allowing specialisation in clinical practice, education, management or research.

Mode of delivery — Problem based learning, high fidelity clinical skills simulation, integrated practice placements and a sandwich year professional placement.

Learning outcomes — Mapped against the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards of proficiency for paramedics (HCPC 2014) as well as the College of Paramedics curriculum guidance (CoP 2015) and the QAA benchmark statement for paramedic science (QAA 2004).

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Career prospects

Successful graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC as a paramedic. This enables them to seek employment in UK ambulance services as well as a range of other clinical specialities.

Those graduates who successfully complete optional specialist clinical modules will be eligible to apply for ‘Specialist Paramedic’ roles which attract an enhanced salary. Career opportunities in research, education and leadership and management exist within the ambulance services and the higher education sectors.
