Overview

The MSc in International Marketing is ideal for students looking to acquire new marketing skills or develop more specialist knowledge in international marketing practice. Suitable for students with or without prior experience of business, marketing or management disciplines, it is aimed at both recent graduates and those with a first degree and work experience.

Offering a well balanced programme of study, the programme will provide you with a thorough understanding of marketing and broader management subjects, which are then applied to the dynamics of an international environment. You will consider the specialist marketing tools, techniques and activities of an organisation, learning how to integrate them into a plan and implement successful international marketing programme. The programme also prepares you to handle environmental, cross-cultural and political issues involved in international marketing.

The programme has been designed specifically to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to pursue a career in an international (or domestic) marketing setting, whether that means working with a large multi-national, a smaller company or even your own business.

Entry requirements

Candidates should have a good first degree (minimum 2:2) not necessarily in business or management studies. Exceptional candidates with appropriate professional qualifications may be admitted on their merits. There is no requirement for previous work experience.

English language requirements:

If we need evidence of your proficiency in English, you will be required to achieve the following minimum scores in one of these recognised tests:

IELTS: 6.0 overall, with no more than one sub-test at 5.0 and no other sub-test below 5.5, and successful completion of an additional six week English pre-sessional course taught by the University of Bradford, which must be completed prior to the start of the course; or

IELTS: 6.5 overall, with no sub-test less than 5.5; or 

Internet-based TOEFL: 94 overall, with minimum scores of Listening 17, Reading 18, Speaking 20, Writing 17); or 

PTE-A (Pearson Test of English-Academic): 60 overall, with no sub-test less than 51.

Candidates who are not citizens of the European Union will also be subject to further requirements imposed by the government for the issue of a student visa. Please check the UK Home Office website for the most up-to-date information, as these requirements are subject to change.

Modules

This one year, full-time programme investigates the functional marketing and international marketing activities of an organisation, understanding the context in which organisations conduct their business and how the business environment influences strategic and operational decision making in a national and international context.

In Semester 1, you will cover six core subjects to develop a fundamental marketing knowledge base (Marketing, International Business Environment, Marketing Communications, Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Research, Operations Management).

Semester 2 covers subjects which are international in orientation (International Marketing, International Business Strategy, Cross-cultural Management and Services Marketing). You will also be able to personalise your studies by choosing a further two subjects from a wide range of elective subjects.

The final and key part of the MSc in International Marketing requires you to undertake either a personal research project assessed by dissertation or a group based consulting project assessed by a group report. We encourage students, where appropriate, to undertake their project within a practical environment, which may be overseas.

Dissertation:

You will undertake an investigation into a marketing related issue or topic, either by a personal research project assessed by dissertation (22,000 words) or by a group based consulting project assessed by a group report, which adds considerable value to your CV and experience.

Learning activities and assessment

Teaching on the full-time programme involves a combination of formal lectures, group discussions, tutorials, seminars and directed reading. Generally the programmes aim to integrate applied and theoretical knowledge with assessment processes that test both knowledge of the disciplines plus their application and limitations. Each course represents approximately 100 hours of study time, of which typically 24 hours is contact time with the course tutor(s)and the remaining 76 hours is made up of pre-reading, directed reading, preparatory work and assessment.

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Additionally, the School of Management has its own dedicated careers team based on the Emm Lane Campus, with support including:

Career prospects

This programme prepares students for a general or specialist career in marketing and management within a wide range of organizations, from large multi-national firms to SME’s within the private sector, and public service and non profit organizations. Typical marketing roles would include marketing management, product or service management, advertising, market research, communications, and consultancy.

Study Support

The Effective Learning Service (ELS) is a dedicated facility within the School of Management, established to support our students to maximise their academic learning (eg assignments and examinations) as well as help overseas students adapt quickly to UK academic requirements. The ELS is run by Martin Sedgley, supported by Amy Allhouse, and provides a huge range of services, including various workshops run during term time, 1-1 consultations and vast printed and online resources to cater for every possible development area.

Fees, Finance and Scholarships

Tuition fees

2017/18:

  • Home/EU: £10,000
  • International: £14,500

Fees may be paid in full at enrolment, benefiting from a fee discount, or paid by instalments.

International applicants who pay their deposit of £2,000 before 31 January will receive a £1,000 discount, or £750 discount if the deposit is paid before 30 April, or a £500 discount if paid before 31 July.

Financial support

Merit Scholarships

Worth up to 50% of the tuition fee.

Merit scholarships are available to support and encourage high calibre self-funding students for entry to a full-time MSc programme based at the School of Management and School of Law.

For these awards we focus on rewarding the potential contribution a student brings to the programme and its cohort - evaluating not just academic excellence, but work and personal achievements also.

How to apply: You do not need to make a separate application for the scholarship. Simply complete your programme application form and you will be automatically assessed for a Merit Scholarship.


Alumni Discount

Self-funded University of Bradford alumni, regardless of when they have graduated, will receive a 15% discount on the self-funded element of their tuition fees if they achieved a 2:2 or above in their undergraduate degree.


Company-sponsored study bursaries

A business relationship bursary of up to 35% is available for companies who have supported or worked with the School who are sponsoring or part-sponsoring an MSc student. The amount will depend on the strength of the relationship, which might include companies who have previously funded a student on a Bradford programme, employed a placement student, facilitated a student project, employed a member of faculty to produce a KTP or research project or commissioned an Executive Education programme. The list is not exhaustive and other business engagement activities could be considered eligible.

We will also need the following supporting documents, along with any other information specified on the course page:

  • Degree certificates/transcripts
  • Research proposal (if required)
  • Two references (including one academic reference)
  • Evidence of English language level (if required)
  • A copy of your passport
