Overview

This programme is designed to meet the needs of existing or aspiring managers in a wide variety of health or social care organisations (including the voluntary or independent sector) who wish to develop strategic management skills.

Participants come from a wide range of organisations and backgrounds, and this facilitates learning with and from other managers. The content allows you to explore a number of management areas depending on your development needs and role in the organisation. You may be a first line manager such as a team leader or you may be in a more senior role but may not previously have undertaken a formal management development programme.

The programme equips you to manage effectively within your organisation and offers you the opportunity to further your career in a management field. The applied nature of the programme provides flexible opportunities to integrate theoretical learning with application to your management practice, developing your skills and knowledge in order to add value within your organisation in today’s rapidly changing environment.

You will critically evaluate strategic and operational approaches to management and reflect critically on management practice within your organisation. You will be able to directly apply your learning to your current and future roles.

All modules can be selected for study as standalone modules if you do not wish to complete the whole programme. The programme aligns with the principles within the University’s curriculum framework, and also with the Healthcare Leadership Model.

The programme is delivered by blended learning with four one-day workshops for each module where you can learn with and from other managers. This approach aims to fit with increasingly busy working lives of managers in health and social care sectors.

Why Bradford?

The programme team are highly experienced in delivering management development and have a background of publications and research. In addition a number of the team are qualified coaches, are qualified to run development and assessment centres and have experience of using a range of psychometric tools.

Entry requirements

The University welcomes applications from all potential students regardless of their previous academic experience; offers are made following detailed consideration of each individual application. Most important in the decision to offer a place is our assessment of a candidate’s potential to benefit from their studies and of their ability to succeed on this particular programme and your application will be based on a combination of your formal academic qualifications and other relevant experience.

Applications are welcome from candidates with non-standard qualifications. Those who lack academic qualifications but who have significant relevant experience will be considered. Please talk to us if you do not fit the standard pattern of entry qualifications. 

English language requirements:

IELTS at 6.5 or the equivalent.

Career support and prospects

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Financial support

Funding for eligible staff within the region will be reviewed by Health Education England (HEE) in the coming months for the 2017/18 academic year. We advise all applicants to apply as normal for 2017/18 courses and further information will be provided as soon as it is available.

Students applying to study a Specialist Skills and Post Registration Development (SSPRD) module or programme, and who work for an approved provider in the Yorkshire and Humber region, may be able to access funding through Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber Contract for the cost of their course fees. This funding is subject to availability.

Students who wish to apply for the above funding will need to provide a funding letter from their employer (on a letterhead) confirming their employment in that organisation and that their employer supports their studies.

If you are unable to apply online, please email admissions@bradford.ac.uk to request a paper application form.

We will also need the following supporting documents, along with any other information specified on the course page:

  • Degree certificates/transcripts
  • Research proposal (if required)
  • Two references (including one academic reference)
  • Evidence of English language level (if required)
  • A copy of your passport

Once you have applied you will have access to the University's Applicant Portal, where you can track the status of your application.

You should also start thinking about how you plan to fund your postgraduate study — you may need to apply for loans or grants at this stage.
