The PG Diploma in Training in Dementia Care is a two year part-time distance learning programme designed to further enhance your understanding and application of evidence guiding care for people with dementia and their families.
The programme will equip students with knowledge and understanding related to the provision of evidence based dementia care training.
Students will obtain knowledge and skills related to the provision of training and will understand the barriers and obstacles to change as well as strategies and skills for implementing change initiatives.
Our distance-learning educational courses in Dementia are designed to be directly applicable to the workplace and to equip students with the skills to implement service delivery improvements.
Our focus is on developing person-centred dementia care in practice, to drive real world change. The programmes are designed for practitioners working in all areas and roles within health and social care, through offering choice in assignment topics meaning work can be tailored to each student's individual interests and role.
As our courses use distance and online learning methods, we enable practitioners and professionals to develop their knowledge in a flexible manner which supports study alongside work and family commitments.
We use the latest in e-learning technology to support students to be in regular contact with tutors and peers to facilitate communities of learning.
The University of Bradford has been providing accredited programmes in Dementia Studies since 2002, and has a long history of cutting-edge research related to person-centred dementia care and innovative methodologies for researching and developing practice in health and social care for people with dementia.
All teaching on the programme is research-informed and delivered by an academic team who are actively involved in relevant fields of dementia research. Members of the course team have completed research projects and studies using film, music, photography, narrative, conversation analysis and other participatory methods to enhance understanding of the experience of dementia.
For each module you are provided with a module study guide produced by the course team. It contains exercises, activities and links to audio and visual materials. To enhance the learning experience you are asked to contribute to on-line discussion groups and take part in real time tutorials.

The specialist pathway in Training in Dementia Care is for students who are already training or expect to train others in dementia care. You should also have a work role or voluntary placement which regularly brings you into contact with people who have dementia for at least 2 hours a week during the academic year (September to June).
You should possess a first degree in a relevant subject at 2:2 or above, or evidence of previous successful study at postgraduate level (FHEQ Level 7).
You must also have access to a computer with internet connection and be prepared to spend on average 15 hours a week on your studies.
Applicants who do not have the above qualifications should contact us, as it may be possible to arrange to submit other evidence of ability.
English language requirements:
Applicants whose first language is not English should have IELTS 6.5 with no sub-tests less than 5.5 or equivalent.

Learning activities and assessment
Understanding the Experiences of People with Dementia
Year 1, Semester 1
The aims of this module are to provide you with a critical understanding of biomedical, psychological and sociological models of dementia, and of the impact of a range of factors on the experience of dementia. You will develop a critical appreciation of the overall experience of living with dementia.
Dementia Training Skills and Approaches
Year 1, Semester 2
This module is suited to people who want to facilitate practice based change and who are already training or expect to train others in dementia care. It will provide you with a critical appreciation of a range of approaches pertinent to adult learning theory, to encourage you to employ teaching and training methods that will facilitate sustainable change in practice. It will enable you to assess training needs, identify and/or create relevant learning materials, and deliver effective programmes of training to dementia care practitioners.
Practice Development and Organisational Change
Year 2, Semester 1
The aims of this module are to provide you with an understanding of ways to improve care or services for people with dementia, by means of small-scale, focused, practice change initiatives. You will identify an area for concern, and follow through a participatory action research cycle in order to produce an action plan for implementing your change initiative.
Evidence Based Dementia Training
Year 2, Semester 2
This module enables you to gather a range of evidence (research, clinical, experiential) in relation to a specific area of dementia training which is of personal interest to you, or of particular relevance to your field of work. You will utilise this evidence to develop evidence-based teaching materials, evaluate your training and develop skills in e-portfolio building.
Career support and prospects
The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.
Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Course fee for students starting in 2016/17:

Funding for eligible staff within the region will be reviewed by Health Education England (HEE) in the coming months for the 2017/18 academic year. We advise all applicants to apply as normal for 2017/18 courses and further information will be provided as soon as it is available.
Students applying to study a Specialist Skills and Post Registration Development (SSPRD) module or programme, and who work for an approved provider in the Yorkshire and Humber region, may be able to access funding through Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber Contract for the cost of their course fees. This funding is subject to availability.
Students who wish to apply for the above funding will need to provide a funding letter from their employer (on a letterhead) confirming their employment in that organisation and that their employer supports their studies.
